MacBook (not pro) and running 2 monitors - DisplayLink problems

Hello! I had no idea that this board was here - brilliant.

I decided to go back to using a MacBook after my second Surface in a row went senile after two years. I got myself a refurbished Macbook Air Apple M2 chip with 8 core CPU and 10 core CPU. It is tear-inducingly beautiful and much nicer to use than the Surface. However, I did not check that it could run two external monitors without additional peripherals, mainly because it genuinely hadn't occurred to me that a MacBook released in the last 3 years wouldn't be able to do that.

Once I realised my mistake (which was significantly after I'd bought it, because I was a bit scared of it and it sat in a box for a few months), I did some research and bought a DisplayLink plug and display dock, which the Internet assured me would run two monitors plus laptop screen for me. However, this is not what's happening. Sometimes it will run 2 external monitors plus laptop screen but sooner or later it just forgets about one of the external monitors and refuses to remember.

Anyone got any ideas what's going on? Do I just need to buy a more powerful laptop?
