Website building, own domain and email

Hiya, I'm helping a local charity build a new website. I'm not a great expert but a bit more techy than the others. We want to be able to keep our existing domain and hosting (free), and keep our existing email arrangements (separate free client) if possible.
We need several simple pages, links out to a few different email addresses (same domain), custom enquiry forms and the facility to accept donations. We also want to build a private area in due course to keep resources for volunteers.
I'm able to test lots of Web builders up to a point, and have a small budget, but to really understand their functionality you understandably have to commit and pay.
Any recommendations?
Squarespace seems great except for reviews suggesting it's expensive if you need several email addresses, keeping your own domain is clunky, and the helpline is not responsive.
Wix is tricky for our charity for political reasons.
WordPress might be the way to go, but I think I should buy a drag and drop plug-in. I can't test one out without committing to a paid subscription first - any recommendations?
Thanks so much if you've got this far!
Experiences and recommendations gratefully received.
