Are there any physicists out there who are questioning the role of engineering in fluid dynamics?

My dad is a massive physics nerd, a sailor and an ex pilot. He believes he's found a gap in the engineering "theory" to explain what keeps planes in the air and sails making boats go, and can't find an online community to discuss it with. Anyone out there?

You could try the Fluid Mechanics section on reddit.com maybe? www.reddit.com/r/FluidMechanics/
