OK Major busy, moving house,, organising new Kindergartens, schools blah blah blah and my bloody email is playing up

Everytime I try to use the shift key, eg for capital letters, brackets etc the curser jumps up to the subject box. I've even tried typing eg new address in word and pasting it in, but it still jumps up to the subject line.

Unfortunately, writing in German requires a lot of capitaols, and I can't even do things like send on my dh's email address, as it has caps in.

Is this happening to anyone else &/or how do I fix it?

As you can see, I can do Caps and ? etc in other things, like MN, just not in gmail. aaarrrrgggghhhhhh

ooh, thats a bugger. wish i knew the answer

have you made sure number lock and caps lock are off?

and closed gmail and opened again?

LilyMunster · 01/04/2008 17:39

or closed browser and opeened again?

ernest · 01/04/2008 17:45

it's def not keypad/number lock, tried closing gmail & safari, and just checked keyboard shortcuts (was hopeful at this one - hadn't heard of it, ) but alas! no, checked, and keyboard shortcuts off.

SO now I have learnt that I cannot write any caps, look like an illiterate moron in German and can't send half the stuff I need to, as it involves c&p, Symbols or caps sigh.

Any other ideas? This will be a huge problem if I can't fix it. Moving in 3 weeks. Not a good time for email to half die.

you need lapin

RustyBear · 01/04/2008 17:49

Are you on a Mac? Apparently this is a known problem with Macs especially with certain versions of Safari.
Someone suggested using Plain text instead of Rich text, but I'm not sure where you'd change this.
I'm on Gmail & my shift works fine - (using IE)

RustyBear · 01/04/2008 17:50

Actually just had a look & there's a thing just above the message box to change from Rich text to Plain text & vv.

ernest · 01/04/2008 17:55

mine worked fine too until today

yes am on a mac with safari.

actaully thanks to your ideas, have tried with firefox and it works normally, phew. but i don't like firefox. will live with it as need mail, but anyone know if this is a curable safari problem? It worked ok yestreday. Why would it suddenly do this to me
. Is my love affair with safari over for good? DO I have to becme unwilling bed artners with firefox

Has it updated recently? - one of the things I googled seemed to indicate it was a problem with one version but not another.

LilyMunster · 01/04/2008 18:05

whats wrong with firefox? i use it, seems nae bother...

ernest · 01/04/2008 18:15

It's ugly and smelly and I don't like it. stamps foot.

As it actually works, maybe I shouldn't be too nasty case it gets the hump and dies on me like Safari

Actually, RustyBear, you are a genious, and have cracked it. SO for some reason, now I have to switch to plain text in Safari, then it works, but RT still works in Firefox. Either way, you wonderful people have saved my bacon & sanity. (but why has this happened, why why why, and will it ever un-happen?)

Re updates - quite probably, there's a bleedin update every 5 minutes. but if it is that, can you back date your update? That is something to ponder once I've finfished moving and popped out my sproglet, in the wee small hours when it won't sleep....

Thansk you again!!!!!!!!!!!

you make me larf (in a nice way)

EvelynsDad · 01/04/2008 19:57

Firefox and Safari aren't the only choices on a Mac, there's also Opera, which is quite good in it's way.

ernest · 02/04/2008 10:33

ED, thanks for your tip. have of course immediateley gone and downloaded it. am a bit unsure but getting used to it and so far am finding it quite good in some respects. I am a creature of habit, loathe to get my addled brain around this new fangled stuff, but so far so good, so ta.

do like the short cut tab bit, would ike it much more if I could get my head round how it works properly. (dumb emoticon)

oh and my mail works fine with it too

I am no use on Safari and Macs.

But email addresses don't have caps in them. Or, rather, it doesn't matter whether they have caps or not.
