I did and got some very basic skills, which could be honed later with a "proper" course if I wanted.

But using the very basics that I have learned, I have created many sites now. They probably don't function as well as they could - as I haven't kept up my learning and I am sure there have been HTML/Javascript changes etc since I first learned about seven years' ago - but they still work and look pretty good, so yours could too - and then you could build on that with a proper course, which I never did.
