I've put a 30 minute a day limit on DD's iPhone (or so I thought) but have just seen that she has spent 6 hrs on it yesterday.

How has this happened? I thought iPhone software was meant to be reliable!

She guessed the passcode
To override it?

What were your steps to set-up the time limit?

If you're just setting an app time limit, then she can just delete it whenever the phone is unlocked.

@Dbank i went into settings, then into Screen time and set up a limit from there?

Very unlikely.

You need family link or similar and set it from your phone, then she can't override it without your passcode

iPhone screen time is notoriously unreliable OP. I have to reset the time limits on my kids phones every single day. It's a known issue that Apple refuses to fix

In which case she can just change it at will. Presumably the screen time limits are intended to be edited and used by the user of the phone.

I don't use any of the parental controls, so I don't know if the functionality you're looking for is supported.

I suggest asking Apple support

Thanks everyone.

This is truly shit, it really is.
Very only just allowed her SM and she's getting really sucked into it. I've set a passcode to set these limits and she's able to carry on as normal! I bought her an iPhone on Family Sharing exactly for these safeguarding reasons - and they're shit.

Use Google Family Link app. It's very reliable and you can set screen time limits, bedtime switch off, individual app time limits etc. Cannot be overridden unless she knows your phone password.

elaeocarpus · 02/01/2024 21:50

I turn off ability to edit their icloud account or pass code as well in Family link ( in screen time, on my phone or go to their account, then content and privacy restrictions) , they can't go into screen time on their phone without a passcode to change app limits etc

WelshMoth · 02/01/2024 22:15

Thank you. I'll look into this.

I know. I feel the same, I'm so cross about it. It's been an issue for years, I'm almost at the point where I throw in the towel and switch is all over to android or google

Mine changed the time zone of the phone to bypass iPhone screen time

Another time she got me to input the passcode whilst screen recording at the same time

She would text herself YouTube videos etc and watch through the messages app thereby avoiding the YouTube time limit.

Screen time works very well if they don't get hold of the pass code!

Have you definitely set it to "block at end of limit" alongside setting limits for each app?

It really doesn't

Yup, definitely set the 'block'.
Very unimpressed with Apple and even less impressed with DD. Her phone is currently confiscated as she has lots of revision to do.
