Setting up Kindle for 12 y/o... Don't want to use a child profile but don't want to set up a personal Amazon acct for them either... How to get round this??

So, I'm going round in circles trying to sort this one out and hoping someone somewhere can shed some light on it.

My son has just turned 12. We have an 'amazon household' and he has a child profile linked to my account. So I have been able to manage and view his activity on his fire tablet and apps/browsers etc.

We've just got him a kids kindle, and have set it up with his 'child profile' with Amazon kids+. I'm unsure whether this was optional... I just sort of stumbled along and it's all done now.

In any case... We have since discovered that the child profiles offer limited functions on kindle, compared to the 'adult' profiles on kindle. E.g... when he used my kindle, he could highlight a word and search on Wikipedia to learn more. The dictionary and translation is available on the kids kindle, but wiki is not. There doesn't seem to be an option to 'turn on' this function.

I understand the Amazon kids+/child profile settings are recommended for children up to 12... So I'm wondering what is available/next steps for my now 12 year old?? We want him to have a bit more of a grown up profile, and allowed certain flexibilities especially on the kindle, but we don't want to give him his own independent account. I still would like his profile to be linked to mine so I can review his book purchases and manage what content is available to him.

What's are options here and how do we set it up??
