i want to create a couple of QR codes linking to some short videos to go into a photo book.

if I use one of the free QR code generators will the link expire within a few months or does it stay available for a while?

thanks

If you use the default chrome one it lasts forever ie right click > create qr code

MamaClausToTheRescue · 18/11/2023 10:01

Thanks @Absinthecracker - how would I do this from a short video in my photo gallery?

Or do I go to chrome and navigate to photo gallery?

You need a static qr code generator.

A QR code is just a visual represention of text, usually a url.

It won't expire, but obviously if the url changes then it'll point to a dead link.

If you want to keep the same QR code for a site/page that might change address then you'll need a dynamic code, otherwise you'll be fine with a bog standard free one.

Thanks @Absinthecracker - how would I do this from a short video in my photo gallery?

Where is the video? Can you expand on "in my photo gallery", i.e. is this in the photo's app on your iPhone etc?

MamaClausToTheRescue · 19/11/2023 23:05

@Dbank thanks - yes it is in my iPhone gallery - I don’t have anywhere to publish the video to create a url. That’s maybe going to be my downfall…

How would you normally share the videos with someone? I have an Android device, so I'd use Google Photos and create a sharing link - that link could be used to create a QR code that could go in a book for family/friends.

Does Apple have something similar? I'm sure they must.

Starbeeees · 19/11/2023 23:15

You could publish to iCloud and share a link, and remove from the cloud when required

ditalini · 19/11/2023 23:19

Another option would be to upload to YouTube and publish as a private video (only accessible via the link, not searchable), then create a QR code from the link.

The downside to that would be that if it's a long video (not sure how many minutes) YouTube might stick an ad in the middle. You could look at Vimeo as another option.

If the video is on your iPhone and you want to share the video, follow these steps.
A) Create a publicly Shared Album.

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
  2. Ensure you're at the "top level" by clicking the < in the top left till you see (Library | For You | Albums | Search) at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select "Albums" at the bottom of the screen
  4. Select the "+" symbol and select "New Shared Album"
  5. Name the Album (EG. Family Album)
  6. You will have the option to send an invite to the new album, but don't bother, just select Create.
  7. The new Album Should appear in Albums
  8. Select it (Which will open it)
  9. Select the icon Top Right (outline of a person with a "+")
  10. Select the Public Website options.
  11. Click "Share Link"
  12. Select Copy
  13. Optionally deselect Subscribers can post, if you don't want people to be able to add to your shared Album.
  14. Paste the link somewhere where you can find it later, i.e. in Notes.

B) Add some videos or Photos to it

  1. Find a photo or video you want to share in Photos
  2. Select the share icon (Square with an up arrow)
  3. Add to shared album

Anyone with the Link copied in step A) 12 should see the shared images.

C) Use any QR code generator to create a QR code from the link saved in step A) 12.

D) Please note

  1. As you update the Shared album, users will see the updated versions, you don't need to recreate the QR code.

  2. When you delete images from a shared album they are only removed from the shared album.

Shout if you get stuck!

If you opt for a static QR code, it will remain active indefinitely and won't expire. This ensures your QR code, linking to your short videos, will work seamlessly for as long as needed. Utilizing a static QR code offers a reliable and permanent solution, making it an ideal choice for embedding in a photo book. This way, the recipients can access the linked videos without any time constraints, providing a lasting connection between your photo book and the associated content. Choose a trustworthy free QR code generator to create your static QR codes for long-lasting accessibility.

@Dbank and @Winter0826 thank you so much for such comprehensive instructions - I think you just saved the day! I’m trying to do this speedily while collecting photos and memories from about 50 people so you’ve made my job a lot easier. I really appreciate this 😘

Just to add, in case it wasn't clear, for Apple users you can send invitations directly in step A) 9, so they can then also add photos and videos in the same way as you did in step B) 1-3.

Provided you leave the "subscribers can post" enabled, as in step A 13.

Shared albums are a great feature, I have several, for different friends and family groups.
