Open Office for non geeks

Is this suitable for non-geeks to use on a daily basis?

Husband is a geek and hates microsoft with a passion. I have just got a new laptop - a macbook - and he keeps mentioning that I need Open Office. I nearly bought some software in the apple shop anyway but I'm quite tempted to give it a try. He did consider setting me off with a home grown linux machine with fully open source software but decided that would be too mch for me. I'm pretty competent but lack the desire to look up how to do everything every time. Just not a geek at all, really . So we compromised on my mac and I am a happy bunny.

I've had a look at the Open Office website and it is clearly mostly used by uber geeks who make my husband look like an amateur. So I haven't downloaded yet.

I'm after normal word processing and a basic spreadsheet (just for household budget-type stuff).

What does the team think?

And if Open Office is a Bad Plan what would you recommend? That doesn't involve microsoft ...

Open Office will be fine.. this link should automatically work out that you need the Mac version (assuming you're surfing on your shiny new Mac). Straight forward and easy to use.

An alternative (but not free) would be iWork for the Mac - it's not Microsoft and it's a doddle to use.

Have fun..
