She got a new laptop a couple of weeks ago, but today when she started it up, it wouldnt let her do anything, and now she has just a blue screen of death on start up

doe she need to take it to a professional, or there a way of trying to sort it herself?

I am alarmed at the blue screen of death.

Can't offer any solutions, but hope a proper geek will be along soon.

lou33 · 10/03/2008 20:09

i suspect she will have to take it to a techy place, but i said i would ask anyway

Doh! Okay, I'm going to have to remember from years back before I defected to the dark side (now a Mac user).

Righto, she needs to turn it off, let the machine properly go off (no whirring of hard disks etc). Then turn it back on and IMMEDIATELY hold down F7. This will boot it up in safe mode. If it works in safe mode it is fixable without expert help most of the time. If this doesn't work, she's truly banjaxed sorry!

Let us know whether she manages to get it working in safe mode and then I'll relay the next step to making it happy again

Are you sure your friend isn't my MiL?

Tell her to turn it upside down and shake it (she has an etch-o-sketch right? )

Seriously either remove the battery or hold down the power button until it clicks off and the hard disk stops spinning (it goes quiet).

lou33 · 10/03/2008 20:25

i will tell her

watch this space, i will report back asap

ok all of that didnt work, she just had a black screen, so i told her to take it to a shop

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 10/03/2008 20:56

Did she put the battery back in?

Actually she's not the worst I've ever had, I once had a secretary who I convinced that the temperature control unit for the room was a voice activation unit for the photocopier:

'Two copies, staple please'

lou33 · 10/03/2008 20:58

lol yes she put hte battery back in

it brought up the blue screen which said i some error code and a start up problem
but then went to a black screen
