Minecraft Java - what can he play it on?

My son is desperate to play Minecraft Java edition, but doesn’t currently have anything on which he can play it. I think he needs a laptop/desktop (not a Chromebook), but am wondering if anyone has any ideas for a cheapish option that would be adequate. Thinking he will be able to use whatever it is for school work too.
Would a refurbished thing be good enough? What about a cheap laptop? Sorry, I am completely clueless and hoping to get something for Christmas so I don’t want to just ask him!

Yes, he'll need a desktop or laptop, but Java is fairly cpu heavy, so it'll need at least an i5-4690 and a decent graphics card. For reference, I run it on a gaming laptop, with an i5-930cpu and a 1660ti graphics card and it still lags. I also run it on a desktop with an i9 13th gen cpu and a 3080 graphics card, which is smoother. I'd say he'll at least need a decent gaming laptop, a cheaper one with in built graphics won't cut it unfortunately. You'll need to look at something for around £1k plus to get decent fps, or it'll be hard and frustrating to play, especially if he's wanting to use shaders.

Sorry, that should say i5-9300H, not i5-930

Thank you so much, @ImInACage , that’s really helpful (and exactly the sort of stuff I am useless at 😁)
