I have an ibook G4, the model before they started fittting airport cards as standard. At the moment we have tesco broadband with a thompson speedtouch 330 external modem but it is beyond crap and is driving my DH crazy as it either won't connect or just cuts off and won't reconnect randomly. He wants to get a cheap laptop but i hate pcs and would rather upgrade my mac.

Here are my questions:-

How possible is it to fit an aiport extreme card?

What else do I need to make it wireless?

If I can't make it wireless, whatelse would be good to make it connect to broadband more consistantly?

Or is there any other option that I haven't thought of (new mac is out of the question at the moment) ?

I've got the same dilemma with my iBook. Apparently it's quite easy to do but the problem is that the airport cards are pretty pricey and hard to come by now. And as my iBook is already 6 or 7 years old I'm not sure it's worth it.

Haven't got my G4 to hand, and it already had Airport installed but from memory you take out the battery and underneath you'll see the metal clip which would hold the card in, if there was one. It's a long metal bit with a bend at each end and it flips up. You just slot the card in in till it clicks and put the clip down over it. It's dead simple.

That's all you need to do to the Mac but you'd need a base station, or some other router but I only do Mac stuff. I've got the Airport Express which just plugs straight into the wall. It'll cost about £100 all in and is dead simple to set up, well, it sets itself up anyway.

Thanks for your help Sarahjct. :0)

Elsie - I know what you mean. I love my mac but I don't really know if it's worth the upgrade. Maybe I'd better start saving for a new model. :0)
