I know how to do it one by one slowly and labouriously using HP Image but how can i do loads at a time. I need to make about 400 photos low res so they can be viewed but are ot good quality when printed out. I think i used to knwo how but have totally forgotten.

If you are running XP you can install the Image Resizer power toy from Microsoft themselves - integrates into Windows Explorer so you can just right mouse button on the file to resize / downsample => www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

If you are running Vista (or XP), use an alternative:
www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/

If you want to do more stuff, I would recommend IrfanView (www.irfanview.com/).
