I have heard of broadband being hacked and hackers having access to whatever one is doing on their systems connected to the broadband at home
.

As I was a victim of a serious crime recently, I called the local PC repair man (he repaired PC & laptop for me loads of times) to ask if he can help me because I have no idea what else I can do to protect my broadband. My broadband is got a password which no one but myself and partner have

PC repair man says it is safe as long as we haven't given out broadband password to anyone but I am of the opinion that it is still hack able even if one hasn't given out their passwords

Also asked if our iPhones are safe from hackers and he said yes.

Am I being paranoid or what because I am sure I have heard otherwise

Pls help, does ok the know pls

Provided you're using a relatively recent modem / router it is very unlikely someone will be able to gain access to your wi-fi network.

However if you're concerned there are some additional steps you can take,

A) Change the Wifi name (SSID) and password.
(worth doing, as you can also do this when you get a new modem / router, and save the hassle of reconnecting all of your devices, joy!)

  1. Login to the modem / router by typing 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1) into your web browser.
  2. Enter the Admin password usually found on the base of the modem / router.
  3. Somewhere there will be the option to change the wifi name and password. (obviously you'll need to reconnect all of your devices to the new network after you click save / okay etc)
  4. remember you can always press the reset button on the modem if you get in a pickle and want to revert the modem / router back to it's defaults.

B) Hide the wifi network name (SSID)
(Slightly paranoid)
Normally your modem / router transmits its name so you can find it and log in, but you can turn it off so other people can't "see" it.)

  1. Login to the modem / router by typing 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1) into your web browser.
  2. Enter the Admin password usually found on the base of the modem / router.
  3. Somewhere there may be the option to Hide the wifi name (SSID).
  4. Your existing devices will still connect, and you can add new devices by entering the hidden network credentials when the device is looking for the network.
  5. Remember you can always press the reset button on the modem if you get in a pickle and want to revert the modem / router back to its defaults.

There are several further steps you can take, like address filtering, and buying a router with sophisticated monitoring etc, but frankly I very much doubt you need it, I would suggest doing Option A, and not worry about it.

So far as iPhones, they are very secure as are the apps, (provided you don't jailbreak the phone to access non-apple approved apps).

Sorry you were hacked, can you give a rough idea what happend so we can try to guess then angle the used

i never suspected that a cistomers broadband was hacked, what regularily happens is someone hacks a website and download lists of username and passwords and then sell them in blocks of a few hundred online

Or people give away their username and password after opening a phishing email

Now imagine a someone got your username and password for mumsnet or linked in, would the same details work on other sites, if so you need to start changing passwords

Hello thanks for the useful and informative replies

I was not hacked but a victim of a serious crime (held hostage with threats of my life and family - blackmail) police are aware they wanted to empty my bank accounts etc

I just want to make everything secure as I do not trust that they won't try other things etc
