I think my laptop is dying

I DO NOT want Vista

If I can't get one I may consider a mac

I bought a new Dell laptop in the autumn, and could get windows xp on it, BUT I had to request it (I didn't want vista either....).

Sheherazadethegoat · 26/02/2008 09:27

i am pretty sure if you have a vista licence you can have xp.

KatyMac · 26/02/2008 09:29

Really - so would I still have to buy it?

Or could i DOWNLOAD IT OR SOMETHING (CAN YOU TELL i'M NOT VERY GOOD AT THIS?) (oopps sorry for shouting)

As per Orangina - Dell still do them (if you ask).

Acer still do business laptops with XP on them - and Sony provide drivers to allow you to downgrade to XP (although they don't say where you should get a copy of XP from!).

Take a look here

orangina · 26/02/2008 09:32

also, it's cheaper to have it pre loaded with xp than with vista (not the reason i did it, but a bit of a bonus...)

KatyMac · 26/02/2008 09:39

I think I have been warned off Dell - I can't remember why tho'

DH just bought a second hand laptop from ebay with XP loaded on it. In fact he has bought 2 (he's running a business). It is a cheap way of doing it but of course, you don't know how much life there is left in a second hand laptop.

KatyMac · 26/02/2008 09:51

I think I would be too scared to buy off ebay

Dabs are currently selling a Compaq 6715s with XP for £325+VAT, with £50 cashback if you buy before 29th Feb, i.e. next few days. The cashback should cover the VAT, so it's effectively £325 + delivery.

Just don't expect much customer service

GeekBoy · 27/02/2008 11:37

one too many words there EvelynsDad.. ... MUCH !! just closed our business account with Dabs due to bad customer service.. ..having said that, when they don't cock things up, stuff gets delivered quickly and the price is nearly always right..

KatyMac · 27/02/2008 11:40

Oh - are they better than Dell?

Compaq is a Hewlett Packard Brand these days. No worse than Dell IMO.

KatyMac · 27/02/2008 12:17

I guess I was meaning ore customer service wise (iyswim)

Dabs are pretty awful, but Dell don't have the best reputation for customer service. You'd go to HP for technical support.

Personally I'd say it's a good deal and you'll get what you pay for on the customer service.

KatyMac · 27/02/2008 14:44

Guess so

I hate buying stuff like this

I get so insecure
