Facebook Hacked - Going round in Circles - Help!

I've had my facebook account for nearly 20 years. It's heavily used - photos/videso/messages/posts/memories of parents (both deceased) and the only means I have for contacting some people. Too much to just write off.

Last week it was hacked. The hacker managed to change the linked phone number and email address and I somehow received no notification from Facebook about changes to my account to my real email address. No idea how they managed to intercept that, but there we are. I can't log on at all.

I have repeatedly tried to reinstate my account by followed the 'troubledshooter' page but because it can't send me a link to anything - I have to select "I don't have access to those". At whcih point I am getting an error message saying "we do not recognise the device you are using. Please attempt to log on from a device you regularly use to connect to facebook."

I have tried from my phone/ipad and laptop - all using my usual IP address. These are all devices that I regularly use. No joy.

My DH has tried to report my account being hacked from his account but keeps being directed to the troubleshooter page where I am hitting my head against a brick wall.

I have emailed [email protected] / [email protected] / [email protected] / [email protected] - all bounced back.

I've watched YouTube tutorials.

Has anyone got anything else I can try? I am at my wits end.

Thanks so much.

Yes, but thank you.

This is so frustrating, I had similar with Instagram and had to send a photo of myself holding up a sign - think mugshot! Still didn't work :(

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 29/11/2022 09:16

The trouble is partly I assume because your devices have all had a software update and so aren’t recognised by Facebook. Do you have any of them backed up so you can return them to a state of a couple of weeks ago which FB might recognise?

BigsyMalone · 29/11/2022 09:18

I lost my page like this. I have had to use my child's mobile to set up a new account for basic access to local event info/Marketplace. Quite sad and frustrating. Good luck.

They probably hacked your email address first and that's how they could delete the initial emails - and they have kicked you out of your logins and deleted the devices that you log in on.

Arseholes. They did mine a couple of weeks ago but I managed to get an email address change in and all they were doing was posting links to a weird fashion chain.

Update

Thanks all for sharing advice and frustrations with me!

So last week, I was at a family members house and I remembered that I had once used their laptop to connect to facebook, so on the wildest off-chance, I tried from there and was miraculously able to get to the point where it asked me to share a photo of myself with my passport and/or driving license. I have got my account back which is a huge relief.

But in all honestly, this was pure luck. There was no reason why that device/IP address was recognised whilst all my usual phone/laptop/ipad from my own home - were not. My family member has done software updates since I use their laptop so it's not that....

Facebook never answered any of my or my DHs messages or emails and were completely useless.

But as we do - I've sucked it up - just grateful to have all my content back.

Glad you got it back! Make sure you set up 2FA, put a recovery email address on there, etc.

Change your password (obviously) and change your email password. Don't use the same one!

Hi I know this is an old post but I've been hacked - all the same problems you had. How did you get to the point of sending them your picture? What did you go on?

BobDear · 12/03/2024 19:14

Hi @LittleMissAnxiety I went here https://www.facebook.com/hacked and went through the process on my friend's laptop. Insane that I couldn't do it form ANY of my own devices or from my home address. Good luck

Thank you very much. I managed to send them my ID and now just waiting to hear from them. Fingers crossed! They're using my page for scams!

I realise that this is an old thread not the same thing happened to me. I wasn't a huge user but my account was 17 years old and like everyone it contained pics of friends, now deceased and extremely sentimental stuff. It happened to me in 2021, and I still feel violated. I think my email address was hacked to start with. I believe that my data is still out there - why are Facebook allowed to get away with this? There is simply no help whatsoever. I've set up a new account now, but only use for Groups, not personal things. Infuriating.

Rassy · 20/09/2024 18:22

@BobDear What makes it worse is that you have to try and jump through hoops to get in touch with Facebook! I couldn't even contact them as hacker had changed my settings so I couldn't get through security. Also, my friends reported the hacking etc but FB did nothing about it!! Angry

Sorry, meant to tag @abracadabra1980
