Compass on iPhone

I never seem to be able to work the compass correctly on my IPhone.
If I know somewhere is south/ southish the compass could show north.
Is it not calibrated correctly?
I never think it shows the correct direction.

The pointer at the top (12 o clock position) will show your bearing. If you line it up to north by spinning it round, the pointer is effectively pointing north.

Im not sure there’s too much to understand. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

You need to hold the phone with your hand outstretched and move it around in a figure of eight to recalibrate it.

Just to add, by pointer I mean the white vertical line facing the top of your phone.

The little red triangle is north. That will always face north and will spin round if you spin your phone while keeping it flat.
