'Hardware Malfunction, defective memory' message has me in a spin

And, and what do I need to do?

I NEED my laptop!

Ok Calmmmm it is under warranty so am just doing a back up in case it dies.

LL or anyone else- any ideas?

Sounds like it needs to be looked at under its warranty, so a back-up is a good idea

Memory is the RAM which will need replacing probably

You can run a memory tester yourself. I use memtest86+ which comes wth Ubuntu Linux, but which is also available standalone from here. You burn it onto a CD and then boot from that - ie you don't run your operating system at all. It then runs a very intensive memory check and, if there's a problem, tells you precisely where. Unless the error you've seen is easy to reproduce, I'd suggest a memory test before taking it in, because otherwise the technicians are liable to fire up the computer, grunt, say "no problem we can see" and hand it back.

That's what happened with a work PC I had (and the contracted maintenance company): when I sent it back again with an error printout the repair happened...

Thanks I will try that later on.

Funnily enough, I restarted twice and got the same error message, then took the battery out and it restarted fine!
