How to recover a photo on a formatted SD card?

I have a memory card that I formatted but did not save the data to my PC. How to recover a photo on a formatted SD card? I consider different options. What are my chances?

Depends whether it was a full format where all the space is re-written with 0000 or if it was a quick format which just erases the information in the master file table (file system depending).
If the former, no chance, the data making up the photo has been replaced
If the latter, there's a chance
I have access to the software needed professionally so I don't have experience of software tools you could try online.

I would say that your chances are pretty good, as long as you haven't subsequently used the card, which could potentially have overwritten vital data. Recuva is recommended often, but didn't work for my wife's formatted memory card. Photorec did.
