I had the same problem, am with virgin too. something to do with my security software interfering with a code somewhere. I cant use outlook. You can put it right, but have to go into all your settings every time, its a pain in the ass.

Okay. Let's start from the basics. Have you EVER been able to do this or is it a new problem?

Have you tried reestablishing your Internet connection so you reauthenticate to the Virgin server?

Have you tried deleting and creating a new mail account on Outlook?

ToomanynewyearsROSElutions · 06/01/2008 20:04

no havent done any of that, thought it just might be server down as only happend tonight?, had outlook since we got computer...so how do i re establish internet connection then?

So you've successfully received and sent emails up until tonight? If so, it'll be the server.

You can try rebooting your Internet connection - find the icon for Internet connect - prob in the bottom right of your window - float your mouse over till you find the right one, open the dialogue box, disconnect, then reconnect. Also reboot Outlook.

right will try that..but to let you know it says after searching "your POP3 server has not responded in 30 seconds" then gives me the option to clsoe or wait.........

if it was working anf you have not changed anything then is may be the ISP POP server ... there are normally two server

POP - Post Office Protocol - to get your email from

and

SMTP - Simple Mail Transport Protocol - to send your email thru

These are required to use your mail account via a 3rd part app like Outlook.. if the POP server goes down then you cannot get your email and if the SMTP server goes down you cannot send email... neither of these have any effect on the ISP's native mail webtool..

Can you still send email??.. I would suggest giving it a day or so and then contacting your provider....

opinionateddad · 06/01/2008 20:58

just seen your previous post.. I would wait a few days to see if the POP server comes back on its own.. if you are unlucky your access to this server is broken.. this can be a pain to get fixed via any ISP helpdesk

Good luck

ToomanynewyearsROSElutions · 06/01/2008 20:59

Ahhh, very clear thankyou...have seen both to POP3 and smtp when i was searching and both were as normal, so am guessing the actual server has gone down(smtp by the sounds of it then?) and should be back up and running when they are return to work and sort it out??...done everything i can think of and CAN send messages so must be that!

Umm - I'm assuming you have SMTP.virgin.net (or whatever) as your server to receive emails?

If you can send but not receive you either have your mail account configured wrong (likely if you've never been able to do it, unlikely if you have ever received an email) OR the mail server is fucked, in which case wait till tomorrow and it'll no doubt be back.

It can be that their relay servers (which bounce the emails from the online repository to you) are failing. It happens sometimes.

ToomanynewyearsROSElutions · 06/01/2008 21:03

Ah thanks WMMC...in terms i understand "is Fucked", LOL'd at that there...will stop flapping and wait and see what happens tomorrow, thanks guys

Tis annoying when that happens. Sorry, I should have said: 'Virgin need to put and extra 50p in the meter' - non-tech translation.

ToomanynewyearsROSElutions · 06/01/2008 21:06

..nah i dont take subtlety..i need laymens terms"tis f*cked that luv"
