Cant view .jpg files on new PC

Ive got a new Windows 11 HP PC and for some reason, it says it doesn't support this type of file.

Ive Googled/Looked on YouTube and they both say you can go into settings and set the default photo app to open this type of file but I still get 'not supported' messages when I set 'photo viewer' and 'Paint.' 'Paint' is Bitmap only apparently and the photo viewer is Tiff only.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do? Seems a bit silly not to be able to open the most common picture type.

Can you convert it to bitmap in Paint, or won't it let you do that either?

If you go to settings -> apps -> default apps and select photos you should be able to see what it is set up for. what is listed?

When I have a problem like this google is usually very helpful. If you're having the problem others are too.

Thanks everyone, Ive slowly tried all these suggestions over the last couple of hours. Its really strange.

The photos app is set as the default for opening jpg or jpeg. It wont open in anything else. I cant right click on it for options either.

I wonder if its because the picture in question is quite old - from an email i sent in 2006. I can download it but just cant open it.

The memory on my laptop is fine - 52% free. windows and security are up to date. Ive rebooted as well.

Ive noticed on my iphone that some old pictures in texts are not supported either so its not just Windows its iOS as well.

Sometimes jpg files get corrupted. Can you try it with a new file?
