Password Managers - where do I start?

I had a message saying that my password for a particular site has been compromised and that I am using the same password for 46 sites so should change it anyway . I use about three passwords, and I’ve been meaning to upgrade this for a while but have been put off by the amount of hassle I imagine it would cause.
I did also use the thing where your phone generates strong passwords and remembers them for a few particularly vulnerable sites (eg Paypal, banking etc), but lost faith when I switched phones recently and it forgot most of them.
Does anyone use a password manager? Any recommendations? Is it a huge hassle to switch? I use an iPhone and a laptop with Windows which are synced (and am not very technically minded but have quite a tech savvy DH who could assist if things get out of hand!).

I've used variations of KeePass for years.

It's implemented for most platforms, so you can copy the database from PC to phone or vice-versa. That downside of that approach is that it can be difficult to keep them in sync.

I'm a bit dubious about online password managers like lastpass that sync with all your devices. They are very convenient, but require a lot of trust in the people running them.

I read about a way of having diff passwords on everything but they're all easy to remember.
What you do is pick a word or a sentence that you'll remember. If using a sentence, take the first letter of each word. Then add a number and special symbol. All of this stays the same all the time.
You then add the name of the site that you are generating the password for to make it unique so if my word was Mumsnet and then I picked 90 for the year I was born and a question mark, this is how it would work...
ASOS Mumsnet90?ASOS
Gmail Mumsnet90?Gmail
Etc.
