Hi all

Hoping someone with some tech knowledge can give me some advice.

I’ve been using Facebook Marketplace to sell & give away some unwanted items, & received a message about one item as follows (with dodgy spelling & grammar & all)
Hi, I was just wondering are your ITEM the same as these ones hear? I’m interested in them !
And then there was a link to the domain name ‘searchfor.cc’

I stupidly clicked on the link without thinking and was taken to a blank web page. I have googled the domain name & apparently it is a fake search engine & browser hijacker Shock. Can anyone tell me what that means & what I should do to hopefully avoid any possible repercussions?

I have blocked & reported on Facebook btw.

Not sure if blank page is a problem, it's when you tell them your password that you're in trouble.

Spagnep · 01/12/2021 20:45

Thanks @lljkk, that’s reassuring. Don’t think there was any attempt to get me to enter a password, but I did just close the browser page - just assumed it wasn’t working.

I don’t really understand what a browser hijacker is or how it works, do you know if it could have accessed any info on my phone or downloaded anything like viruses?

I had this too OP. Thankfully I didn’t click as it looked dodgy so unfortunately I can’t tell you what happens.

lljkk · 01/12/2021 20:52

what was name of the page?

Spagnep · 01/12/2021 20:55

@lljkk it was ‘searchfor.cc’

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry glad you were more cautious than me!

Omg i have clicked this

Fatandfifty49 · 01/12/2021 20:57

A browser hijacker would change your home oage, dump crap on your computer and sliw it down. It can also steal sensitive information but you'd know if you'd been hacked

Arren12 · 01/12/2021 20:58

How would we know @Fatandfifty49

Fatandfifty49 · 04/12/2021 00:53

When mine was hijacked, I had a very strange home page that it would not let me change. I also got loads of random pop ups and the computer went painfully slow

I also clicked on this on my phone. Not a happy bunny
