Smart watch for teen that shows calendar notifications even when phone is off

I'm looking to get DS13 a smart watch for his Christmas present this year but the main thing is it needs to give him calendar notifications when his phone (iPhone) is off. He isn't allowed his phone at school and he has missed a couple of lunchtime clubs because he has forgotten so I thought this would be a good present.

I have an old apple watch that could be an option (I'd upgrade mine) but to be honest, he's had hand-me-down tech for the last few years from DH and me so really I'd like to get him a new watch. Apple is too expensive though and I can see that there are lots of cheaper smart watches but does anyone know of any that would sync to calendar?

TIA Flowers

Would a vibrate alarm be enough to remind him? If so, a Fitbit type watch might be a cheaper option as they can have multiple alarms set through the day.

Hmm that could work, thanks. Would he have to set them himself as at the moment I can send him recurring calendar appts and then he just accepts them and they are on his phone?

as far as i know, no smart watch will give notifications when your phone is off, as your watch does not download events for offline use, it needs to be told by server which gives ping to the phone, and then watch. Newer apple watch can work without phone, but needs esim contract to work (plus signal), still assessing events on calender via internet.

Thanks @Anaphylaxis. I’m fairly techie but I’ve just tested it on my watch with my phone off and you’re right! I have never realised because I suppose I always have my phone on… Confused

Back to square one for a Christmas present idea then…

We use a Huewai Health Band for my eldest and we have to set the alarms on her phone, but once they’ve been set, they work on the watch even if the phone is switched off or at home. It’s worked really well for reminders during the school day. She needs the reminders for one specific medical reason though, so she doesn’t have to remember what each alarm was set for.

Thanks @DaisyDozyDee - that sounds like an option. :)

I think that even a watch with a screen that displays the calendar events would work (like on the Apple watch) would work because even if the alarm doesn't go off, every time DS looks at it for the time, he'd see his next appointment. Perhaps I need to go into an actual shop to check some out...!
