I need to reset the password for my (late) Dh's Apple Mac to retrieve photos - can anyone help me

I hope someone can help me who perhaps knows Apple products. My Dh died earlier this year and I thought I had the correct password for his laptop - but I must be getting something wrong as it wont let me in. (I have tried a few variations on what I thought it was) I am not sure how many password attempts you get so don't want to get locked out.

I finally feel strong enough to access his laptop, and want to make sure I retrieve all the photos from our family holidays etc that are on it. (he did all the proper photography)

So, is it possible to reset the password. I have access to Dh's email / phone (which although I have stopped his number still gets messages). Is there a way you reset a password using email or phone?

This article support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/reset-your-mac-login-password-mh35902/mac explains how to reset the password using your Apple ID. Can you access your husband's Apple ID? You should be able to reset that password if you can access the email associated with the ID.

Thank you @fairlygoodmother - i should have the Apple Id - my Dh has a list of passwords etc ... i'll read that and see if that works

You may also be able to access the photos via his iCloud account if he was using iCloud and photos to sync.
