Repair MacBook Air screen or not?

I have a 6 year old Macbook Air 11". I love it! It is small and light and I only use it for home admin as I use a 13" Pro at work and bring it home if I need to...

The screen on the 11" has a grey band running through it. It still works and has been survivable for my son to use for E Learning etc over lockdown... But obv needs replacing at some point and I want to budget for it. I've been quoted $550 to replace the screen (About 300GBP) and it is $1450 for a new Air- but they only do 13" now...

Repair or replace?

Thank you!

Also, it really offends me that the only option Apple gives is to "recycle it for free" - ooh thanks! What a waste when it could be used by someone, surely?!!

Hi
Are you in the USA?

mynamechangemyrules · 09/09/2020 01:39

No, I'm in Asia. Reckon it's worth fixing?!

Go for the repair. But...

Apple are just about to start releasing a new generation of laptops, and my favourite rumours are that the 12" MacBook might be the first one. It's liable to be $1000+ though, so if that's out of range just go with the repair.

Checking ebay, I do see 2014 11" Airs going for about $500, but they might be lower spec than yours. Maybe worth a look, particularly if you have a use for the Air as a desktop connected to a monitor - the busted one could be used like that, lid closed.

$500 is quite a lot though. How about buying a new model and selling the old one for spares?

Personally I would replace if you can afford to....they have made drastic upgrades to the MacBook Air since yours was released. Unfortunately you do have a substandard model as the specs aren’t great, but if it’s enough for you, that’s fine.

Do you notice a massive difference between the 11” and 13” screen? Bare in mind that the 13” air is designed to be lightweight and travel friendly so it wouldn’t be the exact same experience as your Pro. It’s probably thinner and weighs less so not the same footprint.

I don’t think new MacBooks will be released this month - there was already a slight refresh earlier this year.

Thanks for the advice. Still weighing it up. I use the 11" like a word processor really Smile as I take it to cafes to type up stuff and nothing more technical than an occasional spreadsheet. I hadn't thought of looking for secondhand 11' airs- love that idea! Thanks!
Will then wait it out for an update. My son has the 13" air and it is considerably heavier and not handbag material (priorities Grin)!
