External Storage....I don't know where to start!

I need aprox 2TB - 3TB external (portable storage) to keep copies of some instructional videos I have made for training sessions.

I can't keep them stored on my Mac, as although there's room, I want to be able to play them on my MacBook - which there isn't room.

I don't want to use cloud storage as WIFI is so unreliable at the different places I visit (especially at the moment) and I would rather just plug in and go.

My Mac & Macbook are using Mojave. I will record the videos using Quicktime, then transfer them to the external storage so my Mac doesn't get full.

I have no idea if I need HHD or SDD? and what the name of the product I am looking for is called - eg is it backup storage or an external hard drive?

Obviously I want something reliable, and not too expensive as I am doing the work volunteering for a charity and will pay for this out of my own pocket.

Any help/advice gratefully received, I know nothing!

(disclaimer) - I don't know much about tech but think yes it's called an external hard drive. I've just been told they are about £50 for a decent one from Curry's. You will need a usb lead to connect it up, a short one would suffice, unless you want it for something else. There's also a thing called a flash drive? I'm sure someone more tech savvy will be along!

You need an External hard drive, but unless money is no object I doubt it will be SSD as a 1TB model (let alone a 2TB or 3TB) will be approx £150.
You can get a standard 4TB HDD from around the £90 mark.
Amazon for instance do a Western Digital with USB leads.

I would suggest checking with the manufacturer that whichever one you get is compatible with Mojave. Some of the older drives don't always play nicely with latest Mac OS

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm a bit clearer now!

How long are the videos? 3tb is a lot,

If you can try and compress the videos down a bit.

If you can find a 2.5" drive big enough go for that, the 3.5", or vdesktopv drives tend to need a separate power supply

The difference between HDD and SSD is speed. SSD uses a different technology which is faster than SSD but more expensive. It is unlikely you need the additional speed.

As FixTheBone says, 3TB is a huge amount. For HD videos that works out at around 2,000 hours of videos using typical compression settings. Even with 4K videos you would get around 500 hours in that space.

It's about 1,600 hrs of video, I've tried compressing them, but that really affected the quality on payback.
I've bought the WD passport 2tb whiteroom suggested (not through Amazon, as I try not to buy anything through them) so I'm hoping the videos will all fit in there.
Thanks!
