Printer ink - can I take out?

So I’ve just recently put new cartridges (a black & a tri colour) in our HP deskjet 2542 printer & now the bloody cable wire has come apart near the transformer so the printer isn’t working! I could get a new cable which would be the cheapest option, but will take longer, or just get a new HP printer compatable with those ink cartridges- when it comes to replacing them could I use the ones in the printer I have now? So they don’t go to waste, iukwim.

If we do decide to just get a cable, where’s the best, reliable place to look? I’ve seen one on eBay for around £15.

Cheapest would to be a new transformer.
Amazon (3rd party) seem to be offering a genuine HP pack with a 24 hour dispatch for the same £15
