iphone battery since latest update

I used to be able to use my iPhone freely and still have about 40% battery left at bedtime. Now since doing the latest update, it's gone potty! My user habits haven't changed at all yet at 10.15 this morning I had just 1% left!
I fully charged it again, used it an average amount and now it's totally flat.

Any idea what's going on please?

How old is the iPhone?

starlingsintheslipstream · 25/10/2019 16:19

I was just discussing similar with ds. I haven't done the update yet though. My battery is showing as 1% but should be full-ish charge. It's been showing 1% for the past hour and I've been listening to music on it so clearly that's not correct. Something strange going on - mine's an old SE.

Twickerhun · 25/10/2019 16:22

Yes I have the same issue! Driving me potty!

Figmentofimagination · 25/10/2019 16:28

I've not done the update yet but I've noticed the same thing. I have a 7. In the last 2 weeks my battery has been down to less than 20% by lunch time. Previously I didn't have to charge it till I get home about 6pm.

Not brilliant when I'm about to go on a massive family holiday and will be using my phone as a camera. I'll have to carry a couple of portable chargers with me.

I had problems with the last update and it was an iPhone 6s so creaky!
I turned off a lot of the location services and background stuff in settings.
I also paid £40 for a new battery which was a bargain as my phone is like new.

Settings -> Battery -> Battery Health.

Check your battery is actually OK. If the phone is older it may be degraded.

Also, make sure you've updated to the latest version. There's been quite a few releases of iOS 13. The first few fairly buggy. You should be running 13.1.3.

Finally force quit all apps and do a hard reboot.

Switch to Samsung! I did recently after years of iPhones and they're sooo much better!

iknowimcoming · 25/10/2019 17:02

Had same problem with IPad and realised the update had reset the background app refresh to on for every single app - turned everything unnecessary off again and it's been fine since - hth!

Now if anyone knows how to make my email function properly since the update please advise!

TheWorldAsh · 25/10/2019 17:08

@Destinysdaughter thanks for the laugh. I've been given an Samsung S10 for work and it's one of the worst phones I've ever used.

Nothing against Android but ugh Samsung is a hard pass.

thank you for all the replies.

I am using 13.1.3. The thought of doing a hard reboot is making me nervous....

I did contact apple yesterday and they did a diagnostic check on the phone and told me that the battery is degraded.

Call me cynical but isn't it a coincidence that my phone was absolutely fine until I ran the update and yet now the battery is degraded?

I would get a battery case if your phone battery is poor but the phone works well.

TheWorldAsh · 27/10/2019 12:10

@mckenzie a hard reboot is safe but take a backup before hand (actually make sure you're backing up regularly regardless)

You could have checked the battery yourself, it's under Settings - Battery. I bet it wasn't 100% before you did the upgrade to iOS 13.

Oh and as for Apple making your battery fail after iOS 13. That's a great conspiracy theory but more likely due to age. Batteries are consumables and have a finite lifespan.
