Websites asking you to click to carry on reading

I'm noticing this more and more. You click to read an article someone has linked, you tap to agree to cookies, you read first 2/3 paras, then have to click to 'carry on reading' and rest of article appears. Not a firewall thing so why do web designers do this? Why the extra click? Why not just carry on scrolling...?

Not life or death, just interested. TIA.
