Will a VGA monitor work connected to a DVI-D port on a PC?

We have a new PC and have been trying to connect it to our existing monitor with no success. I have now read that as its a DVD-d port connecting to a VGA monitor, this might not be compatible. Is this correct, meaning we need to get a monitor with a dvi port as well.

Any advice appreciated
