I got Norton 2006 half price last August. It's been fine but I don't want to shell out for full price when it ends.

Someone told me you can download free antivirus etc. but are the free ones any good?

Am not techy person so I need it to be reliable and simple.

Any thoughts/ recommendations?

Thanks

I use avg now after reading a thread where Aitch recommended it and it is really good.

here you go!

flightattendant · 07/08/2007 18:32

Oh thanks! Why is it free, do you know?
I never understand these things!

ditto RBH, had it at least 3 months and it's been great.

Also do I need the pay for stuff or is the basic free download enough?

Getting excited now about saving my 50 quid I would have spent on Symantec!

I just have the free version and it does the trick. Only vaguely annoying thing is that you can't change the time it scans your computer each day but it is around 8am so not really a problem. Nitpicking really!

CarGirl · 07/08/2007 18:37

it's a completely free download I think the idea is that you then go and buy more enhanced stuff from them? I didn't put it on my pc though a geeky friend did it for us.

flightattendant · 07/08/2007 18:40

So does that mean you need to have it on every morning at 8am or you'll be vulnerable?

(sorry to be a dufus)

CarGirl · 07/08/2007 18:44

No! I think the time that it scans is the time that you installed it perhaps, don't think ours does it at 8am???? Anyway it will just do it the next time you turn on.

flightattendant · 07/08/2007 18:48

Ah! Thankyou Cargirl and RBH

FWIW, I think once you have norton you can get it again using your registered details for a lot less than you originally paid for it. Might vary with whatever package you have but worth checking out by going to their website.
We've had norton for a few years and every year pay symantec for it again online.

You can set the time AVG updates and scans, there's a scheduler under 'Test center'.

Definitely bin Norton, it slows your PC down noticeably.

nomdeplume · 07/08/2007 20:14

AVG freeware is ace.

RBH · 07/08/2007 21:24

Cheers Slacker! Have reset my scan times so not even a petty complaint about avg now!

I use avast - it's fab and free
