I am totally confused. I have googled and cannot find any advice that works... except maybe on Reddit which is a forum I don’t understand at all

I am hoping this makes sense...
When I go into direct messages on Instagram I only want to be able to message the people that I am following. Currently it suggests a long list of people to message and is very easy to press the wrong person by mistake! I have tried unfollowing people and it makes no difference.
Can it be done?
