Remote dictation systems

I work for a charity whose work involves producing quite a lot of documentation for various purposes. We could be way more efficient through the use of dictation rather than having people typing everything themselves, and have some lovely volunteers who are prepared to do remote typing.

The problem is that no-one really has much of a clue about remote dictation systems. We have someone who is massively helpful with our IT but he doesn't have experience of this. We're pretty cash-strapped, and for immediate purposes could probably only run to facilities for two people to dictate and for a couple of transcribers, though if we can expand that in the future we need that facility also.

So I have two queries:

  1. Any reasonably cheap but reliable recommendations? I've seen some systems that work via phones, which could be good if it saves us buying separate dictating machines, but it depends what they cost and how well they work.
  1. Does anyone know of anywhere we might pick used equipment up free or very cheaply, e.g. businesses upgrading their systems?

Happy to provide details of the charity privately if anyone needs to verify our bona fides.
