Setting up iPad without credit card

Just this, I gave my dh (completely non technical) my old iPad but it is now painfully slow. I want to buy one for him as a surprise so want to go into Apple and set one up for him complete with his first and only email. As Iwill also have to create an ID for him will I need his credit card? If I ask him for it I will be giving the game away. He is 79 and this appears to be the simplest way to get him into the technology that is needed today. I know he wants one but never wants to spend on himself and he won’t want me to buy it for him. However, once I have got it I know he will be pleased. Also is family sharing easy as I could share my music and books? Any advice gratefully received.

TalkinPeace, thank you. I remember being told I had to put my credit card in during the setting up process. I was able to remove it after but the Apple salesman told me I had to put it on in order to create my ID. This was about six or seven years ago so perhaps it has changed. As I already had an ID it didn’t occur again when I bought a new iPad and phone. Thank you again.
