Swapping sim cards and phones

Can anyone help?

My current phone ends in a few months. But i am thinking of purchasing a new one now. I am going to give dh this one, but swap the sims rounds so i can finish of this contract (more data minutes etc) and keep new phone. And dh can have new sim (pay monthly as currently on payg) my issue is, its 2 different networks, how do i do this.

Can you buy the new phone outright, so it's not on a contract and comes unlocked? If the old phone is locked to the network, your network may well unlock it free. I can't remember what the rules are for unlocking old phones but it should be easy to find on Google.
