Which mp3 for music, audiobooks & Linux?

Am thinking of getting an mp3 player for my birthday and as thanks to Mr Finknottle (my uber-geek) we're strictly open source/non-Microsoft, what player can anyone recommend? I don't want to pay loads to download stuff but would love to upload my audiobooks & music from CDs. Also don't want to buy a player and listen to Mr Fink go on about how the files are incompatible.

Can anyone help?

what version of Linux are you using?

You'll need a player that appears as a standard USB hard-drive and doesn't require something like SonicStage to transfter tracks to (which pretty much rules out all the Sony stuff as they convert from mp3 to Sony's own format..).My wife has a Creative Zen that you can just drag stuff to (and I've played with that from my linux machines).

Thanks for answering, HandyTrinkett.
We're using Ubuntu 7.04 & Feisty Fawn according to Mr Fink - is he winding me up with the latter?
Saw the Creative Zen ones and iRiver Clix too. Used to think it was iPod or rubbish but am rapidly learning there are equally good/superior ones on the market.

Well ubuntu is the distro of choice for humans and Feisty Fawn is indeed the name of Ubuntu 7 - following on the heels of Warty Warthog, Hoary Hedgehog, Breezy Badger and Dapper Drake.

Taking a look at the various ubuntu forums around it looks like it's possible to get some of the Creative Zens to work as well as a bunch of the iRiver stuff...

...you might need Mr Fink to do some geek magic but it shouldn't be anything too onerous under Feisty...

...happy Open Sourcing...

Thanks again - will point him in the right direction and then go shopping.

"Warty Warthog, Hoary Hedgehog, Breezy Badger and Dapper Drake."
Now I've got Ducky Lucky, Henny Penny, Goosey Loosey et al. running through my head!
