Reading text messages without alerting sender

Is there a way of opening and reading a text message on an Android phone without the sender knowing you have read it?

Texts don't have read recipients do they?!

Me either. The only way through WhatsApp is to do it thru the viewing window when you get a notification.

Can you set up banner notifications so the whole text appears on your homescreen?

If it's a bog standard SMS they won't know anyway.

On WhatsApp it's possible to read without someone knowing by:

1. Turn on airplane mode
2. Open WhatsApp and read the message
3. Close WhatsApp (as in exit the app, don't just press your home button!)
4. Turn off airplane mode

Tested many a time... sometimes needs must!

You can turn off read receipts in whatsapp..
