I have Microsoft Word 2003 , I have been sent a documnet via email which has been created by Word 2007 and is shown as a .docx document.

I cannot open it or do anything with it.

Any ideas how I can work on this document.

An idiots guide please

you need to ask the person who sent it to you to resend in .doc

(according to DH anyways)

nannyogg · 31/05/2007 17:29

Hiya - you could try right-clicking on the doc and then choose 'open with' and choose word 2003 from the list. As far as I'm aware it should be ok as they are both Word documents. If that doesnt work suggest searching online for a guide.

I have asked that but she still sent it in docx .

How would the other person change it to a doc file ?

right they need to go to save as again then under the bit where they wriote what the doc is to be called, there's a drop down box. in there they'll see it shown as word 98-2003. (I think it's 98 anyhow) but it will say .doc next to it.

DH seems to think there maybe a plug in (for you) on the windows site but is doubtful.

hth

(sorry they have to slect that option and resave should work then.

Or go here and download the compatibility pack (its highlighed in blue) and once its installed and updated Word 2003 it should let you open any document saved with Office 2007

Think this is what your DH meant munz....
office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

Apparently you may not be able to edit everything in it - eg equations get turned into images, but at least you can read it & you could retype any bits you can't edit.

Editing a word document should be ok with the Add-on. Editing could only be a problem with some tables and charts. But the majority of Word docs should be ok.

If you want something a bit more up to date that behaves exactly the same as Word/office without paying, you can download www.openoffice.org/

CaptainUnderpants · 31/05/2007 18:05

MunnziesDH - I have downloaded the pack and it works !

Thank you , thank you very much
