Parental controls on Fortnite?

First of all let me say DH and I are not technologically minded at all. We made the basic mistake of letting 10 year old ds play fortnite using his headset and realised he could be talking to anybody. Took the headset away and then realised he could message and receive messages from anybody and discovered inappropriate messages so took the game off him altogether until we can put in some parental controls.

Dh has gone into privacy settings and set everything to " no one" being allowed to message or ds being allowed to message anybody but it still appears that it can be done as dh has tested it.

Can anybody let me know if he can play the game without actually needing to chat to anybody and if so how we can set this?

I do not want to prevent him playing the game altogether if there is a way around it.

Which device does he play on?
There should be a setting on the actual Fortnite game menu that switches game chat off. My ds also 10 plays this game a lot, mostly with his school friends but if not then he creates his own Xbox party set to invite only then nobody else can join without his permission

Sorry I should have said PlayStation 4!

If you create a party on the ps4 and make it private only invited players can join. Also turn off voice chat in the Fortnite game settings then apply the changes at bottom of screen. I’m not sure about ps4 settings for messages as we mainly use xbox but I have the Xbox app on my phone so can keep an eye on what goes on. I think PlayStation have an app that does the same
