I used to on my old PC, every now and again, not sure if this is still common practice or if some other command has taken its place??

I still do on vista

I defrag my computer regularly, I do a menu driven version (programs\accessories\system tools I think). I use the clean up tool first.

southeastastra · 14/05/2007 21:43

stoppinattwo · 14/05/2007 21:43

Don't know about Vista (haven't gone there yet) but on XP you can right click on My Computer, & choose Manage - Defrag is under Storage.
Just checked - mine needs doing!

OggsFrog · 14/05/2007 21:52

Just out of interest, how long does it/should it take to defrag?

Mine takes hours. Surely that's not right?

Frascati · 14/05/2007 21:53

Where is "my computer" located on XP, thanks?

RustyBear · 14/05/2007 21:56

Depends on how your pc is set up - It may be on your desktop, usually up near the top left, or try the start menu, it's usually on the right hand side.

HuwEdwards · 14/05/2007 21:57

Oggsfrog, mine took overnight once.

OggsFrog · 14/05/2007 22:00

Left click Start button, and it should be listed on the right towards the top?

OggsFrog · 14/05/2007 22:02

Oh good Huw, it's not just me then.

Thought it was an indication of crapness of my computer .

Frascati · 14/05/2007 22:06

It can't harm the pc doing it can it?

Frascati · 14/05/2007 22:06

What does it do by the way?

OggsFrog · 15/05/2007 00:32

It's sort of a virtual Mrs Overall type office cleaner; sort of potters about collecting all the misfiled files/ bits of paper that you scribbled an address on/ bits that you're using as a bookmark/ bits that you're using as a coaster and have coffee ring marks on them/ bits that are filed on the floor etc etc - and puts them all in the right place, then squishes them up to leave more space on your computer...

...I think. (But don't quote me)

stoppinattwo · 15/05/2007 18:26
