Anyone got a Huawei P20?

I’ve just bought a Huawei P20 after being an apple user for years. I’m open minded about Android and got sick of Apple’s general attitude. I’ve been led to believe that Android allows for more customisation though can be more complicated to get used to. So I’m hoping my issues are purely user inflicted and someone can help me.

  1. I want to use a PIN to unlock, not a pattern or a thumbprint or facial recognition. This option exists. However, when I type the PIN, the numbers come up on screen for ages (seconds) before being hidden as a dot. I don’t want them to be shown on screen at all - it seems a risk to me as I am bound to unlock the phone in front of others and I use the same PIN for all sorts of things and want to continue to do so. Any way to stop the numbers showing?
  1. Every time I type, the phone vibrates. It is really annoying. From googling I can only find answers for people on earlier versions of Android. Mine is on 8.1. How do I turn off the vibrate for the keypad? (I’m happy for it to vibrate when ringing/messages arriving - though would like to know how to stop that too).
  1. When I was in the shop and scrolled on the home page from one side to the other, the screen moved in an arc - as if each screen of icons was a playing card and they were spread out in a fan (ie circular, rather than just side by side). I thought that looked really cool and would like my phone to do the same. Unfortunately it is just like the iPhone and moves sideways parallel, rather than in an arc. V boring. I don’t even know how to google this one but if anyone knows how, I’d be grateful!

I suspect i’ll have more questions later!

Thanks

Just randomly found your post! I have a p20, just getting used to it. I don't have all the answers for you but you can turn the vibrate when typing off in the settings. And you can choose how the screen 'pages' move if you hold down on the home screen and choose transitions. I'm not sure if they have the option you have described though

Hurrah! I was giving up on getting any response Smile

Could you be really kind and explain to me exactly how to turn the vibrate bit off when typing? Literally step by step? I can’t seem to find it. (Will it turn vibrate off for everything? Or just typing? I kind of like the vibrate for messages/phone calls, it’s just the typing bit I can’t stand).

Thanks!

Settings >> Sound >> Other sounds >> Vibrate on tap (turn off)

SilverHairedCat · 02/05/2018 09:02

Settings >> Lock screen & Security >> Screen Lock - look for a wheel next to this title or 'settings' option >> any option to change how long numbers are visible for?

SilverHairedCat · 02/05/2018 09:04

Caveat - long term Android user, not specifically a P20.

Settings >> Appearance >> Pane transitions. Select the version you like.

My partner has just got a P20 pro. He hates it. I'm constantly sorting it out for him. I have the S9+ and it has loads of problems. Bloody smartphones.

Vibration on the keypad - settings > sound > more sound settings - choose which ones you want on and off

I like the phone so far. I haven't tried out too much though

Smidge001 · 02/05/2018 21:09

Thanks all. I haven’t had the p20 with me today (still been using the iPhone til I can work these things out Grin) so will try tonight/tomorrow. Really appreciate the help.

@SleepingInYourFowerbed
I’ve managed to change the way the pages scroll via your ‘hold the home screen and choose transitions’ instruction! Thanks! (It was the option called ‘windmill’)

But I’m still finding it impossible to turn the vibrate off for when I type.

I’ve trued your and @SilverHairedCat suggestions of going into Settings/Sound/More sound settings.

In there are the following options:

“Dial pad touch tones” - mine set to default (options are none/default/melody)

“Screen lock” - mine is off
“Screenshot sound” - mine is on
“Screen touch” - mine is off
“Vibrate on touch” vibrate when touching the virtual navigation bar, dialler, and unlocking device - mine is off
“Navigation button vibration” vibrate when operating off-screen navigation - mine is on

ca t see a setting for how long the numbers are displayed when entering a pin either, but I might be able to cope with that one and just change to the wiggly shape thing. But I really need to stop the buzzing!!

Hurrah!! Success. Seems it’s not in the normal settings area at all.

I had to search the phone for ‘Swiftkey keyboard’ which is a separate app I think. Then go to ‘sound & vibration’. Then turn off the ‘use android default vibration’ setting.

Thought worth letting you know in case anyone else searches for the same thing! I found plenty of people asking the same question via google but this was the only time I found an answer that worked.

Happy now! Might start using the new phone at last!

No answers for you but I have one and it's driving me mad as the face recognition only works half the time. Got it for the camera

Just bumping this thread to see how you’re getting on with it. I’ve just upgraded my iPhone 6s for one, not arrived yet but I’m nervous switching away from iPhones. So sick of the crappy battery life and the price for decent storage hoping this will solve it for me but I’m promised that I can return and swap for an iPhone 8 if I can’t get on with it.
