Can people HACK into MSN Messenger

Not going into details but I have reason to believe someone is out to cause me trouble. I know they told me ages ago that their xdh hacked into her MSN account when they split - not sure if this is true?

Well, something happened last night that made me think this person is out to cause trouble??? And today I've had 2 different people showing as offline when they weren't and then when I've mentioned they're showing as offline, suddenly they come back online. Could be coincidence but could someone be playing with my MSN in the background without me seeing?

They ARE listed as a contact still (long story, reasons for not being removed).

Any info would be great as I have NO IDEA about this stuff.

TIA

I think MSN is playing up abit, I was chatting to pinktulips last week and it was saying she was offline, then suddening she was online, even though it said she was online her end.

Thank god for that - got some serious crap going on and was getting worried lol

Is this who I think it is BTW? Have you changed the end of your chat name? (I was HellyBelly ages ago)

yes it is, see you on MSN sometimes, but its your office one normally and I don't want to disturb your work

looneytune - I believe you can set MSN to show everyone else that you're offline when you're actually online. I use Skype in a similar way - I always have my presence set to "unavailable" even when I am....

hehe I hardly go in office, mainly at weekends. The office pc is on though as i'm on a wireless network and need to grab files from time to time.

If you ever want to chat on my laptop, it's looneytune76 at hotmail dot co dot uk I do wonder from time to time if you have a better situation now re: neighbours and all that

Thanks for your help on this one

Cheers DrDaddy. I knew about this but wondered about the hacking bit as thought someone was playing with my account. My friends who were showing offline at my end were definitely showing online at their end. All very odd

have added you

Lucycat · 02/05/2007 14:35

yes you can be chatting to someone and still appear offline.

looneytune · 02/05/2007 14:43

Yes but they have to set it to offline don't they? These people didn't

Did it show them actually as "offline" or as "away". The default setting is to show the person's presence status as "away" when there is no activity for 10 mins.

looneytune · 02/05/2007 15:01

it was 'offline' - i.e. saying messages will be delivered when they next log in.

you can still send mesages even if it appears you are ofline. and the other way round if someone you think is offline is online they can message you.

But if your friedn is on tiscali i know this has been playing up with msn recently, or it could just be MSN

BUt it is also possible to have your account hacked as with anything else online.

looneytune · 02/05/2007 15:17

Ok, thanks everyone. I'm not worried about what each status can do etc, I know all that. It's that I was chatting to a & b this morning and both of them were showing as offline but they told me they were set to online at home.

Anyway, I'm with Tiscali so maybe that's it? i feel better about the reason for this happening now.

Thanks

I suppose the hacking bit was more me wonderoing if someone could get into my laptop and mess about with it without me knowing.
