Dh and I are not tecky. Internet speed bothers us a bit (can take hours to download a movie etc on Sky, we can't have SkyQ because our connection isn't good enough) and Netflix sometimes won't run....but it bothers teenage son hugely.

He tried to download Starwars battlefield 2 and I kid you not it took over 24 hours to download and is now pretty unplayable. Teenage son has been in tears over it (he loves his gaming) and refers to our 'third world internet'.

A week ago we upgraded to superfast fibre broadband with BT and the download and upload speeds are with that! - as tested tonight using Ookla and Speakeasy (as per this article: www.pcworld.com/article/2048594/network-router/how-to-test-your-home-internet-connection-speed.html

Apparently the average UK download speed is ten times what we get (I have an article I can link to)

We are semi-rural, not rural - just 2 miles from the nearest town

What do we do??? Any advice please

Ring bt, pay through the nose, get patronised and ultimately fobbed off.
That's what I did.

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2018 20:06

Apparently the term "guaranteed 30M" means they'll do their best to get you to 70% of 30. New definition of the word to me.

hmcAsWas · 24/01/2018 20:07

That does sound familiar StealthPolarBear

What speed are you paying for?
Are you able to get Virgin Media (probably not though) in your area?

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2018 21:33

Not helpful am I?!

hmcAsWas · 24/01/2018 21:42

Well maybe not entirely, but at least I am getting a solidarity vibe from you from a fellow sufferer!

Your infinity line has a settling in period of 10 days - if it hasn't got to a reasonable speed by the end of next week than complain to the sales team.

hmcAsWas · 25/01/2018 08:08

Dh has already complained to them (they don't care) but I will keep monitoring for the next 3 days (which brings us up to 10 days). Its going to have to improve substantially though

We have (allegedly) Infinity 1 superfast fibre broadband which is promising "up to 38 Mb" - whereas our download speed is 3 mbs. That's lower even than what they promise for mere standard copper broadband i.e. 17Mb

They have given us some flannel that the box / exchange / hub (can't think of correct terminology) for it - which is quarter of a mile down the road - is overloaded and under capacity and needs upgrading and that they can't do anything about it - its up to Openwork!

They've told us we could pay thousands to install our own hub. Wtf?

Sorry, it makes me seethe

I feel your pain.
Have you been called a "wonderful woman" on the phone yet

StealthPolarBear · 25/01/2018 08:30

Sorry just seen it was your dh. Presumably they called him wonderful man

hmcAsWas · 25/01/2018 08:46

I'll ask him Stealth Grin

If the local box was incapable of delivering the service then surely they have mis-sold it. If you need to wait on OpenReach it will be whenever they schedule it.

espoleta · 25/01/2018 09:34

What channel WiFi are you on?
We had an issue we were using a combined channel (so both 5 and 2.4ghz). We changed solely to 5 which means the range is less but stronger.
To note, not all devices can operate off 5ghz so if you have old specially anriod widows stuff it could not work.

hmcAsWas · 25/01/2018 10:57

I don't know about the Wifi channel espoleta - something I need to check I think
