Any suggestions?

Have done defrag/disc clean up, emptied recycle bin nd any progs I don't use.
Loads of free space yet still slow.
No viruses showing up either.

Also anyone know how to get rid of messenger?
and also get rid of items from the task bar?

Not necessarily - some packages do have them.
They find the 'adware' that often gets put on your computer when you download stuff - it records the sites you go to so they can send you appropriate adverts. It's not allnecessarily actually harmful - though some can be- but it can slow down your pc.It's worth getting a reputable one I use Adaware, which you can get here

Do you know how to get rid of Live messenger?Its not on add/remove programmes?

I'm not sure - I think it's hidden I have a vague idea I saw somthing about it on a forum somewhere - I'll have a look

I found a reference to it but you have to run some code, which is not something I'd advise you to do on instructions from me - if something went wrong I wouldn't know how to get you out of it.
However one thing - did you look under W in the Add/Remove list, because it's Windows Live Messenger - it's there on mine

you should run ad aware and see what it picks up

when i do that mine always runs faster

Done adaware and it only picked up some cookies which i tend to delete routinely anyway.Net went off again earlier and took 3 restarts to connect again.

Tried to post this before and the net went off again!

And I found messenger, don't know how I missed it before so thats one problem sorted!

Do Ctrl Alt Delete to get Task Manager, go to Processes, click on CPU to sort by that and also Mem Usage, see if anything weird becomes apparent in teh Programs list

Get it looked at by an expert. Am sure you can find somewhere that'll do a PC healthcheck for not much locally.

Honestly do NOT tamper with it without knowing exactly what you're doing.

def computer had someone put on my wireless and he said it was very slow and fiddled about (toned down some of the fancy bits like the task bar/menus and made them more basic and grey) and it is faster but this week I phoned the help line and they are sat there saying 'has it not re-started yet?' 'now?' 'now?' as it takes so long.

HM-Know what you mean I am awful for fiddling!Think will have to get the bloke back on it again.
