Office 365 "subscription expired"

DS had office 365 software through his university. He graduated this year and now a message appears "subscription expired".

Obviously he now has to either pay for a new subscription or find an alternative. However what happens to all his documents and files? Ahey associated with the academic e mail address?
Will it all go pooft? Does he need to uninstall the 365 before re-installing a new subscription?

Any advice much appreciated!

This explains what happens. Not sure if you can copy them and save them a flash drive, I would think so. Then you can use one of the free similar office sw such as LibreOffice. Hope this helps.

Office365 ends

Thanks for that link (I had googled BTW but didn't quite get the answer).
LibreOffice looks like a good alternative.
