Plasma Ball - safe fun??

Ok not really geeky, more scientific but didn't know where to put this!!

DP bought dd a plasma ball today from the Natural World shop. I always loved them when I was little and she was mesmerised by them in the shop.

I have major electric shock issues. I cannot touch anything. Shop doors, lift buttons, when I turn the lights on at home the bulbs generally blow 6 out of 10 times.

I just plugged her plasma ball i and we were playing with it but I stopped to let her play and she was brushing her foot against my leg and the blue sparks were flying!! I couldn't touch it after that!

So does the plasma ball work on the basis of it produces an electric charge which charges you up as you touch it and then you need to touch something that is earthed in order to release the charge from your body??

Is it a safe thing for dd to play with? (well not ply, but you know what I mean!)
