The future in an app

Any techy mums on here? Just wondering how easy it is to design an app? Is it costly? Looking for possible ways to release me from single mum poverty land .... apps seem to be the way to go... I have a few ideas but am I barking up the wrong garden path?

Techy, not a mum. I work in an app/web/ad agency as a web developer, not started on apps yet.

Design an app...? Design would be the "drawing" part of the making. Any one can come up with a colour scheme and layouts I guess, making it look good is the skill.

Making the app is potentially harder because you need to learn programming languages. Java for android and swift for iOS or unity for both. And then you have to be pretty good at solving the problems that come up.

What kind of apps were you thinking of? My company has put out some on their own dime and they do not make meaningful amounts of money (yet, hoping to make the next candy crush ), they are portfolio pieces to show clients to get more work.
