Evening all,
I had a search earlier but couldn't find any threads like this, hoping I've put this in the right place...

I've heard of ted talks and had a look at the site, but it seemed quite hard to navigate from my phone, I'd really like to do something with my evenings in 2017 that doesn't revolve around Netflix box sets and was wondering if anyone can recommend some ted talks to watch instead?

Sandi Toksvig's is interesting, funny and thought provoking

I also like this one about challenging perceptions and critical thinking

www.ted.com/talks/margaret_heffernan_dare_to_disagree

(warning - contains references to research into life-limiting illness in children)

Bettydownthehall · 30/12/2016 19:44

I liked fake it until you make it. About how body language affects confidence 😀

franke · 30/12/2016 19:51

I found Monica Lewinsky's talk really good.

Susan Cain who wrote 'Quiet' gave a talk about introverts.

There was a good one about orgasms.

A guy gave a five minute talk about what went through his mind as the aeroplane he was on crashed into the Potomac (sp)

Sorry I'm being a bit vague but I think these are all searchable. You could also start with their lists of most popular by category, if they still have them. Love Ted Talks.

JaneEyrehead · 30/12/2016 19:52

I liked the Jon Ronson ones

OneFlewOverTheMumsNest · 30/12/2016 19:52

Following. I'd like to do this too.

Deschain · 30/12/2016 19:57

Jill Bolt Taylor is a neuroanatomist that had a stroke. Her Ted talk is quite remarkable.

I also enjoyed David Blaines account of how he trained to break the world record for holding breath underwater.

franke · 30/12/2016 20:05

Can't find the aeroplane crash one.

But there are some really good playlists within each ctaegory.

Here you go

Ken Robinson I think it is? About education and creativity. He's done a few good ones.

Mehfruittea · 30/12/2016 20:28

Simon Sinek - if you don't understand people you don't understand business

Stella Young - inspiration porn and the objectification of disability

Yy to Monica Lewinsky

There are a few more that I love but will have to check my history to find them. Will check back on this thread, I love TED talks.

Cindbelly · 30/12/2016 20:47

Lots of good suggestions here thanks everyone. I'd love to be able to use this thread as a reference and I will post any I find too if anyone else is interested?
Please keep the suggestions coming...

Not a TED talk but Randy Pausch last lecture is very good here

Sadik · 30/12/2016 20:58

Good idea for a thread. I liked Raoul Martinez's talk Creating Freedom (though was then inspired to buy his book - sadly it appears he said pretty much everything he had to say in the 20 minute talk!)

Two of my faves!

Eleanor Longden: The Voices Inside My Head. Story of her life with schizophenia.

https://www.ted.com/talks/eleanorlongdennthevoicessinmyy_head

Johann Hari: Everything You Think You Know About Addiction Is Wrong. Why the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it is connection.

TalbotAMan · 30/12/2016 21:11

My favourite is probably Amy Cuddy

I bookmarked this ages ago intending to watch a bunch of Ted Talks then never got around to it. Some look quite interesting.

PookieSnackenberger · 30/12/2016 21:17

Loved many already mentioned - especially Susan Cain on introverts as it resonated with what I think about all my wonderful introverted pupils.

Esther Perel is very interesting on relationships and infidelity.

There is also an excellent one on the power of failing by an eminent scientist whose name escapes me.

Brene Brown - The power of vulnerbility

So many more ... I love getting lost in TED talks on a Saturday afternoon.

PookieSnackenberger · 30/12/2016 21:20

Another one;

Why I stopped watching porn by Ran Gavrieli

I have eclectic tastes!

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 30/12/2016 21:21

David Byrne did a good one on how venues have shaped music over the last few hundred years.

Also recommend Brene Brown (both talks) and Amy Cuddy's talk.

PookieSnackenberger · 30/12/2016 21:22

Another;

What really matters at the end of life by B J Miller

www.ted.com/talks/bj_miller_what_really_matters_at_the_end_of_life

OohhThatsMe · 30/12/2016 21:23

Monica Lewinsky was amazing. Thoroughly deserved that standing ovation.
