TED talk recommendations

Evening all,
I had a search earlier but couldn't find any threads like this, hoping I've put this in the right place...

I've heard of ted talks and had a look at the site, but it seemed quite hard to navigate from my phone, I'd really like to do something with my evenings in 2017 that doesn't revolve around Netflix box sets and was wondering if anyone can recommend some ted talks to watch instead?

Sheryl Sandberg on why we have too few women leaders. It's all pretty obvious stuff now, with hindsight, but I watched it after I'd had my children and it made me realise how unquestioningly I had made my career choices without thinking about the context in which I had made them.

Sheryl WuDunn on our century's greatest injustice, the global oppression of women and girls. I recommend the accompanying book, "Half the Sky".

Lots to note here. One of the most interesting, if gory, I heard was a scientist who had invented something called I think Labrador which identified human remains and looked like a Hoover. Moving its over ground made a particular noise according to what lay beneath the soil.

Cindbelly · 02/01/2017 09:51

Ooh grim do you have a link?

Found it at last!

Dr Arpad Vass - an instructor at the National Forensic Academy and has assisted law enforcement on numerous homicide investigations. One of his current interests is developing new technology to help locate clandestine graves by the use of odor mortis.

Cindbelly · 04/01/2017 07:50

Thanks grim I will take a look at that later on - I do love csi type things

Is it just me who doesn't really appreciate TED talks? I often get a sense of arrogance from the speaker. As if they've thought up the most amazing concept/explanation/theory and it's the only truth.

Perhaps I've watched the wrong ones.

Sgtmajormummy · 04/01/2017 08:50

DD and I listen to TED talks when we're on long drives. Trouble is, I don't get to see the titles!
One memorable talk was about helping child refugees as they settled in to the USA. Another was about how learning an instrument gives your brain a better chance against ageing (with an animation) and a third was about student-based teaching curricula (probably the one a PP mentions). I also enjoyed The Dark Playground and What Matters at the End of Life (I listened to that on my own, obviously!).

They haven't all been to our taste, but you could do much worse things with 14 minutes of your time than listen to somebody articulately describe what they're passionate about.

The Tim Urban one about procrastination linked above is the funniest I've seen. The Amy Cuddy research has just failed to be replicated (sorry!) and the TED Radio Hour podcast is great as you get to hear snippets of different talks plus interviews with the presenters on a different theme each time.

Cindbelly · 07/01/2017 20:27

Commenting so I don't lose this thread off my 'I'm on' lost

Ooh mumsnet have emailed me to see if I want to have this thread moved somewhere permanent!

Does anyone know how I go about replying? Where will it get moved to?

The Simon Sinek (sp?) one on good leaders being those who have a passion and belief in what they do, like Apple, Martin Luther King etc was quite interesting.

extrabiotin · 18/01/2017 18:37

As already said the Susan Cain on introverts. Powerful stuff IMO.

I don't watch the talks myself, (except the Susan Cain one), instead I subscribe to the podcasts. You can select the genre you want and it's great for listening while heading off to sleep.

The podcast list is easy to navigate. So much good stuff in there.

IhatchedaSnorlax · 18/01/2017 18:49

Following as I like these too!

IonaMumsnet · 19/01/2017 19:56

Hi folks. We've had some requests for this thread to be moved so that it doesn't vanish down a hole after 90 days as Chat threads do. So we're going to move it over to Geeky Stuff in a tick. Please do follow it over there and continue to post.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 19/01/2017 20:00

That's disappointing about Amy Cuddy's research. DH and I have separately had good results from power posing in a toilet cubicle before a big presentation at work - the power of placebo maybe?

Cindbelly · 19/01/2017 22:41

Thanks iona Grin

Nickname1980 · 27/01/2017 23:02

Bumping this as hoping to get more recommendations! Recently watched and liked Ashley Judd's talk.

TyneTeas · 28/01/2017 12:55

Another hopeful bump
